Frequently Asked Questions
The main options are full dentures (replacing all teeth in the upper or lower jaw), partial dentures (replacing one or several missing teeth), and flexible partials such as Valplast. Modern digital or “e-dentures” are also now available, made from a gum scan rather than traditional impressions. Denture South offers all of these at our Christchurch clinic and can talk you through which option suits your situation during a free consultation.
Full dentures replace an entire arch of missing teeth — upper, lower, or both — and rest on your gums. Partial dentures fill in gaps where you still have some natural teeth remaining, clipping or fitting around them to restore your smile and bite. The right choice depends on how many teeth are missing, the condition of any remaining teeth, and your budget — a good denturist will walk you through the options before recommending anything.
Digital dentures (sometimes called e-dentures) are made using an intraoral scan of your gums rather than putty impressions, with the denture itself designed in CAD software and milled or printed. The result is typically a more precise fit, more natural-looking tooth shapes, and a more comfortable process — no gagging on impression material. Denture South offers e-dentures as one of our standard options.
Yes — most dentures can be repaired, relined, or added to rather than replaced. A reline reshapes the fitting surface to match your gums (useful if your dentures feel loose or bulky), repairs fix cracks or broken teeth, and additions allow extra teeth to be added if you lose a natural tooth later. Denture South handles all three at our Somerfield clinic, often with same-day or next-day turnaround for simple repairs.
Valplast is a brand of flexible partial denture made from a thin, lightweight thermoplastic instead of the traditional rigid acrylic and metal. They’re typically more comfortable to wear, more discreet (no visible metal clasps), and faster to make than conventional partials — and usually only slightly more expensive. They’re a popular choice for people replacing one or two missing teeth who want a natural-looking, easy-to-wear solution.
If you grind or clench your teeth at night, a custom-fitted bite splint (also called a night guard or occlusal guard) protects your teeth from wear and can prevent expensive restorative work down the track. If you play contact or impact sport, a custom sports mouthguard offers far better protection than a boil-and-bite version from the chemist. Both are made from impressions or scans of your own mouth — Denture South makes custom guards for both purposes.
